January 22nd
- Your final draft of your Proposal should be uploaded into the GoogleDrive folder. Also, make sure your Portfolio is completed and printed for collection.
- Read "Ethnographic Writing" by Khan (under documents). Make sure to record notes in your Reading Logs.
- Edit "Instructor's Bio" in GoogleDrive. Only make one (1) change to the document. This change can be a name, detail, location, etc. Try not to change something that has already been modified. Compare the document to the original to verify a detail. You may also add a detail that isn't reflected in the biography.
If it is offending me, that is fine. I will be reading this out loud in class, so make sure the class will laugh at your comment. You are allowed to offend me, but please be respectful of your peers. If you think someone in the class will be offended, rethink your comment before posting.
January 27th and January 29th
- We will not be holding class on January 27th! We will be using Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday as conference days. You must meet with me for a 10 minute slot (Likely will only be for about 5 minutes). If you do not make an appointment with me or miss your appointment, it will cost you an absence. All appointments are to be made via the "instructor" page on this site. click on a time that suites you on the 26th, 27th, or 28th.
- Haller - Walk, Talk, Cook, Eat: A Guide to Using Sources (under documents). Make sure to record notes in your Reading Log.
- Driscoll - Introduction to Primary Research: Observations, Surveys, and Interviews (under documents). Make sure to record notes in your Reading Log.
- Do these articles express your concerns for research? When to use why types of research?
- Do you agree/disagree with the methods the authors talk about?
- Does this help with your understanding of primary research?
- How do you plan on using these articles for your project 2?
February 3rd
After talking about different types of research, we need to think about how to use it and why. The following two readings will help us talk about research in reference to our own ethnography. Both readings can be found under documents.
- Understanding Rhetoric - Issue 5: Research - 181-216 (Make sure you record notes in your Reading Log.)
- The ethnography example (on the bottom of the page)
February 5th
Today, we talked about Observations and how they are important to ethnographies. You have to assignments to do:
You can watch one clip or multiple, but they must add up to at least 5 minutes. It can be anything from a movie clip, documentary, or recorded footage. Make sure you take a snapshot of at least 1 moment in each clip, or 2 snapshots if you only use one clip. Write a short paragraph as to why you took this snapshot. The whole document should be at least 400 words. Put it in the appropriate folder and label your file "Last Name - Observe the Screen".
- Observe the Screen: For this assignment, you must take notes on a video clip of your choice in a double-entry notebook. Create two columns (or separate the document as top and bottom) and label the first "observations" and the second "thoughts." Watch the clip and record what you see, then explain it further in your thoughts section.

- Research Timeline: You are to create your own timeline for Unit 2. Below is an outline of how many classes we have left in the unit with the different deadlines associated with your ethnography. Create a research/process timeline that fits your needs. It can be as detailed or as simple as you like, but make sure it fits your needs. You know your schedule better than anyone else. You can find an example of the timeline in Driscoll's piece "Introduction to Primary Research" on page 157. Please upload your timeline to GoogleDrive with the file name "Last Name - Timeline" as well as in your process log. (make sure your log is already shared with me).
February 10th
Today we talked about Interviews and Surveys. For your homework, you have to do two things:
- Conduct a four question interview with someone (does not have to be from our class) and transcribe the answers into a Google Drive document. You should have the proper heading, but also the interviewee's name. List the questions and transcribe the answers underneath. This is good practice for when you do your interview with your discourse community. Make sure the questions are open, not closed. For more information on question formulation, reference Driscoll's piece "Introduction to Primary Research." The file name should be entitled "Last Name - First Interview."
- Create a survey on http://www.surveymonkey.com about your community. You must create at least six questions in any format you want, but keep in mind the restraints of a survey. Do you want the users to take fifteen minutes or only five? Create the survey and copy and paste a link into a Google Document. Write a short reflection on why you decided to set up the survey the way you did. What do you want to accomplish through this survey? Upload the file in the appropriate folder with the title "Last Name - Survey the Monkey."
February 12th
You should have already started researching your community as well as joining it. For Thursday' class, bring in two articles/resources for your community. Don't use Wikipedia for this exercise. Try not to use the most obvious source. Do a little research. It is ok if you cannot find a "peer-reviewed" article, we will go over databases and article use on Thursday.
Write a short summary (at least 200 words) for each article. Upload these summaries (in the same document) to the appropriate folder with the title "Last Name - Article Search."

- Your first draft is due (600 words). Make sure you look at the main assignment page for further information.
- Make sure you are updating your discourse and process logs. You need to have an entry every week for your process log.
February 19th
- Read "Writing from Sources, Writing from Sentences." Make sure you take notes in your reading logs.
- Finish "Annoying Sources" (for partial credit) if you have not done so already.
- Make sure you add an entry into your Process log.

ENJOY BREAK!
...but also work on your ethnography. You should be working on Draft 2 (Due March 5). You should have your Discourse Log nearly finished and have most of your primary and secondary research done. Remember, the final draft is due on March 19th.

Draft 2 is due! This draft is a rough draft with at least 1800 words included. Your discourse log should also be near completion. This means you should have every single criteria filled in with details and notes. It should be mostly sentences, but not full paragraphs.
Remember to post this in the proper GoogleDoc folder as well as printing out a copy along with your Discourse log.
Make sure you are updating your process logs!

Use the weekend to finish all your research, complete your logs, and organize how your research is going to fit where. Start thinking about how you want to stylize your ethnography.
Read "Beyond Black on White" and create an entry in your reading log. Think about how you want to use some of these ideas in your paper.
Finally, read and comment on at least one group member's 2nd draft. Comment on a draft that doesn't already have commentary. Remember, you want to be constructive. Don't write "it was good" or "I like this." Explain what works and what doesn't work. Make suggestions to take it further. Give comments that will be useful, no throw away.

Work on your papers. Take the comments I gave you and try to do a revision and finish this thing. Most of you have to add at least 1000 words to finish your ethnography, others have about 500. Try to put together a near finished draft with all your research. Your Discourse Logs should be done and ready to hand in.
Remember, to bring two (2) copies of your draft to class, along with your finished Discourse Log.

March 17th
Make sure you read and commented on two (2) drafts over the weekend (Digitally). Follow the same guidelines that are on the Peer Review sheet from class. To get full credit, you must make substantial comments on two other drafts.
Remember, you must comment on one draft from your group and one other person from class of your choosing (not in your group). Bring technology to the classroom so you can work on your papers in class. |

Remember, there is an extra workshop on March 17th from 6-8pm for extra credit. Please sign up in the GoogleDrive document.
