Project Three: Multimodal Transformation
Now that your ethnography is finished, now it's time to enter the public sphere. Most of your communities exist in a public space, so a simple black on white document doesn't do it justice. This unit will be all about transforming that document into a multimodal piece. We will be focusing on audio, video, digital images, posters, and interactive digital medias. Below are some examples of what you can use to transform your project, but you can pitch a different idea as well. You will be preparing for both the Celebration of Student Writing on April 9th as well as in class presentations/portfolios. You can work in a group or by yourself; whatever you are more comfortable with. Remember, be creative.
Important Dates
March 26: 2 paragraph "pitch" for transformation/presentation due.
March 31 and April 2: Workshop days. April 7: In class presentations April 9: Celebration of Student Writing (CSW) 4-5:30pm. April 14: Unit Reflection Due (660 words) |
Requirements
The project is split into two parts: Multimodal Transformation and CSW Presentation.

What is the Celebration of Student Writing?
The Celebration of Student Writing (CSW) is a conference style event where hundreds of students from Composition 121 present their research projects from Unit 2. This event is considered a multimodal event, which means there are presentations is all different modes or mediums. This presentation is open to the public, giving you the opportunity to interact with other students and members of Eastern and talk about your research and your community. This event, as outlined in our course syllabus, is mandatory for all students to attend.
Types of Presentations
Digital Presentations
For your in class presentation and portfolio, you are to turn your ethnography into a multimodal composition. How you go about transforming your composition is up to you, but you should think about your Mode, Media, Auidence, Purpose, and Situation (MAPS). Think about the media you want to explore and what would fit your community best. Make sure to include both text and images/video. Physical Presentation As part of your in class presentation and the CSW, you need to come up with a physical component. Think of the best way you can physically represent your community, whether it be dressing up, bringing someone from your community, making a poster, etc. This should be your talking piece in order to attract people to your presentation. |

There are many options to choose from in regards to your presentations. There are several questions you can ask yourself in order to get started:
Do I want to present by myself or with one or more people?
You have the option to pair up or even work as a group for the presentations. Some people work better alone and others thrive in a group. You still need to have your community represented and you have to have to make sure you are sharing the work, but you may want to split up the technology if you aren't as familiar with it.
What mode and media do I want to use?
I only listed out a few of the hundreds of mediums you can use for this project. If you aren't as familiar with technology, start small. Maybe using Prezi or GoogleSlides is a good place to start. Weebly isn't too difficult either. Be practical in your choice because you only have a couple weeks to do this project. Do you want to learn some code and mess around with Wordpress or do you want something where you can quickly make blog posts, like in Tumblr?
How can I make my digital and physical presentations work together?
Your digital project is the real meat of the presentation where a lot of your information will be, but the physical can be your talking point. Do you want to dress up like someone in your community or have an artifact from your community? Do you want to draw people into your Prezi at the table by dribbling your basketball to get their attention? Maybe you have a poster on the table with a bunch of images and a tablet with a website or slideshow. Think about what would make the most sense for both your community and your presentations.
Where does the ethnography fit into all this?
You all wrote ethnographies using photos and interviews. Some of you have videos and other media to show off. Creating a website or slideshow from your 2800 word essay is going to be a lesson in brevity and conciseness. What do you think is the most important stuff to put into these different medias? What are you going to reserve to say when people approach you? You don't want to clutter your presentation or copy and paste your whole paper into a blog, so where is the sweet spot?

Unit Reflection
For this unit, you did two (2) presentations (different than what you are used to doing) and transformed your ethnography into both a physical and digital representations of your research. For some of you, this was probably an easy and natural process, but for others it was tough to get your head around. I want you to reflect on the following:
- Talk about how your feelings towards both the in class and CSW presentations. What did you feel before? What about after?
- What was your biggest success and your biggest failure for these presentations?
- Did you find the multimodal transformation easy or difficult? Why?
- What did your process look like for the transformation?
